The Basics of Backgammon Tactics – Part One

The objective of a Backgammon match is to move your pieces around the Backgammon board and pull those pieces from the game board quicker than your opposing player who works harder to do the same buthowever they move in the opposite direction. Succeeding in a match of Backgammon needsrequires both strategy and luck. How far you can shift your checkers is up to the numbers from rolling the dice, and just how you shift your chips are determined by your overall playing tactics. Players use different plans in the different parts of a game based on your positions and opponent’s.

The Running Game Strategy

The goal of the Running Game plan is to lure all your pieces into your inside board and get them off as fast as you could. This plan focuses on the pace of shifting your checkers with little or no efforts to hit or barricade your competitor’s checkers. The ideal time to employ this technique is when you believe you can move your own chips a lot faster than the opposition does: when 1) you have less checkers on the game board; 2) all your chips have moved beyond your competitor’s chips; or 3) the opposing player doesn’t use the hitting or blocking technique.

The Blocking Game Tactic

The main goal of the blocking plan, by the name, is to stop your competitor’s chips, temporarily, not worrying about shifting your chips quickly. As soon as you have created the barrier for the competitor’s movement with a couple of pieces, you can move your other checkers swiftly from the game board. You will need to also have a good strategy when to extract and move the checkers that you used for blocking. The game gets interesting when the opponent uses the same blocking strategy.
