Backgammon – 3 Basic Plans

In exceptionally general terms, there are 3 basic plans used. You must be able to hop between techniques instantly as the action of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This is comprised of building a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at least as thick as you are able to achieve, to block in your competitor’s pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most suitable procedure at the start of the match. You can build the wall anyplace between your 11-point and your two-point and then move it into your home board as the match advances.

The Blitz

This is composed of locking your home board as fast as possible while keeping your opposer on the bar. For example, if your opposer rolls an early 2 and shifts one checker from your one-point to your three-point and you then toss a 5-5, you are able to play six/one 6/1 8/3 eight/three. Your opposer is now in big-time dire straits due to the fact that they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have locked half your home board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have two or more checkers in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor spot is a position consisting of at a minimum two of your pieces.) It needs to be used when you are decidedly behind as this action greatly improves your opportunities. The strongest areas for anchor spots are near your competitor’s smaller points and also on adjoining points or with a single point in between. Timing is important for a powerful backgame: besides, there’s no reason having two nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break down this right away, while your competitor is shifting their checkers home, considering that you don’t have any other extra checkers to move! In this case, it is better to have pieces on the bar so that you can preserve your position up until your opposer provides you a chance to hit, so it will be a wonderful idea to try and get your competitor to get them in this situation!
